A Weekend in Cambridge, England

The weekend after the Christmas/New Year break, we ventured out of London once more; this time to the quaint city of Cambridge, about an hour by train from London. A relative of Brendan’s (I think Mike would be Brendan’s first cousin once removed, but really, it’s easier just to say ‘relative’) lives just outside Cambridge near a town called Ely, where we also visited him in 2008 whilst we were gallivanting the world. I loved Cambridge back then and was keen to see it once more, this time through the lens of my new camera. I was not disappointed; the city was everything I remembered and more, and we spent the weekend strolling, eating, drinking, relaxing, perusing fine art and doing some more strolling…it really doesn’t get much better than that! Instead of trying to describe the beauty of such a wonderful and historical place, I’ll show you instead:

a bike with our name on it!

delicious gourmet cheeses

one of the many colleges in Cambridge

the picturesque town of Ely

can you guess what this is?

I had no idea what this was, until Mike explained that it is, in fact, mistletoe! Apparently mistletoe is a kind of parasitic plant that grows in balls like this upon other trees. Who would have guessed?!

pretty archway at one of the colleges

the infamous King's college

a stunning winter sunset

If you ever find yourself in Cambridge, my number one recommendation is just to walk and soak in the beauty and incredible architecture of the city. There are plenty of walking tours which I’m sure are interesting, or, if you’re there in Summer, a must-do is a punting tour on the river. Not only is it beautiful and informative, it’s a bunch of fun and properly English!
