[inspired by travel: literary map]

Whether I’m in the midst of planning my next trip, have just returned from a holiday or have no upcoming journeys I’m always thinking about travel, and I love having things around me that remind me of places I’ve been already or inspire me to visit new places.

This hand-letterd literary map of Britain is is on my wish list; I love this new twist on an average map; it makes me want to visit so many more places in the UK to walk in the shoes of some of the greatest authors ever. As a book lover and travel addict, this ticks all the right boxes for me!

[packing checklist: Muji shoe bags]

When I was young(er) and travelling for five months on a ridiculously tight budget, I never cared much for what I was wearing, the condition of my clothes or how I looked in general. I present to you evidence of this; an embarrassing photo of my old travelling attire, taken the day I left Adelaide in 2008 to travel for ‘just a few months’:

Needless to say my love of fashion and style has developed since then and I’m no longer content with wearing running shoes at all times except special occasions, when the Birkenstocks would be ceremoniously unpacked. Yes, it’s true. I am ashamed.

Packing heels and nice clothing does come with its own set of problems though; one of them being how to protect your nice shoes from being ruined in your suitcase (e.g. colour rubbing from jeans onto light shoes or liquids leaking onto suede) and protecting clothes from being ruined by your shoes (e.g. buckles catching on delicate fabrics, dirt staining light clothing). In the past, I’d grab an old pillowcase and simply wrap my nice shoes inside, but I recently spotted this cute alternative and will be stocking up before my next trip:

At just £7.95 (the price is the same for either the small or large size) these shoe travel bags from Muji will protect your stylish travel wardrobe and have the added bonus of being much, much cooler than an old pillowcase!

What travel essentials do you always pack?

[Travel Tuesday: dreaming of Egypt]

I think it’s fair to say that most kids have heard of and been fascinated by Egypt at an early age, and the same is true for me. I remember hearing about the pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the Nile and King Tutankhamun in school; Moses, the Red Sea and Mount Sinai from Sunday School; and Cleopatra and hieroglyphics from visits to museums with my family. Despite my interest in the many gems this North African country has to offer, it never occurred to me that I would ever be able to visit Egypt and see these things with my own two eyes.

In fact, the first time it ever crossed my mind that I could go to Egypt was when I was 18 years old and backpacking with two friends up the east coast of my home country, Australia. I had been peer-pressured into completing my open water scuba qualification, a sport that had previously terrified me due to my claustrophobia but which I quickly fell in love with. After a magical dive on the Great Barrier Reef where I was mesmerised by jewel-coloured coral, a lazy bottom-dwelling shark, a curious turtle and a graceful manta ray dancing just beyond my reach, I just couldn’t get enough of this new underwater world. When my diving instructor told me that some of the best scuba diving in the world was to be found in Egypt, I knew I needed to travel there to see it for myself. The same two friends and I decided to go together and experience this amazing scuba diving for ourselves, but for a number of reasons the trip never eventuated.

Fast-forward almost ten years to the present and although I’ve tried, circumstances have always seemed to prevent my dream Egyptian holiday from coming true. It’s remained in my top five must-visit destinations, and this recent post on the easyJet Holidays blog only served to renew my passion to pull on my diving gear and wade into the Egyptian waters. Swimming with dolphins is certainly on my bucket list, and where better to do it than in a country known for its fantastic scuba diving as well as being so rich in historical and cultural wonders?

I’m not yet sure when I will get to visit Egypt; but hopefully it’ll be sooner than I had planned – this post is my entry to the easyJet Holidays #InspiredByEgypt to win a holiday to Sharm el Sheik…wish me luck!

[packing checklist: Sennheiser HD 201 headphones]

I’ve never been one to worry about which headphones I’ll pack when I travel; I always considered it unnecessary to buy something that came free with my iPod and that the airline provided to me as part of my airfare. Yes, my ears always hurt after wearing either of these options for more than a couple of hours, but I never really thought about it. My husband, on the other hand, spends time surfing the internet for new, fancy, noise-cancelling, over-priced (in my opinion) headphones and has purchased a few different brands and styles.

On our latest trip to Australia he offered for me to use his Sennheiser HD201 headphones  which were in his backpack. I accepted, thinking that he just wanted to free up some space in his hand luggage, but after wearing them for just a few minutes I was converted, and Brendan never got the headphones back.

What is so good about these? Well, for someone who’s never used anything fancier than those white iPod earphones, the Sennheiser headphones offered a level of comfort I never expected; unlike iPod or airline products, these babies have cushioning that sits around your ears. This means that there is nothing pressing on and thereby bruising your ears, either inside or out. Sleeping is so much more comfortable (am I the only one who has woken up mid-flight due to headphones crushing my ears?), and they actually stay in place. Although not technically noise-cancelling, a considerable amount of flight noise was removed when I was wearing these, which made the whole flight so much more pleasant.

The best bit about this product is its surprisingly affordable price tag. They retail at under £25 and can be purchased in many online stores including Amazon.

Admittedly, these are the first decent headphones I have ever tried, so I can’t compare them to anything else out there, and I’m sure there are many excellent, much better products that I haven’t tried. But for the price and the level of comfort the Sennheiser HD 201 headphones offer I would highly recommend that you pack them for your next trip. I know I will be!

What headphones do you use? Are you like me, and simply deal with the discomfort of the standard earphones and headphones?

[lavish traveller: Florence Broadhurst for Kate Spade]

I don’t know about you but I love browsing online stores for luxurious travel accessories, and I try to imagine the people who are willing to drop around £815 for a suitcase which may or may not actually be practical for travelling. I’m sure these people exist, but I’m certainly not one of them. Nevertheless, there’s no harm in window shopping, and today’s browsing session had me stumble upon this stylish suitcase by Florence Broadhurst for Kate Spade:

The gorgeous Japanese-print case (described as a storage trunk) is priced at a mere $1,295 which is around £815 – this does, of course, include 14-carat gold plated hardware, cowhide trim and custom woven Spade jacquard lining.

Alternatively, you could spend £17 less and book an eight night cruise for yourself and a friend around Spain and Portugal including all meals with TravelZoo’s current deal. But then again, would your cruise be gold-plated?!
