Remember, Remember…

…the 5th of November! Happy Guy Fawkes Day everyone! This is possibly one of the most random of celebrations: essentially it’s the British people’s way of being glad for the foiling of Guy Fawkes’ attempted bombing of the houses of parliament in the 1600s. And to show their gladness, they go out, buy loads of fireworks and light them at random. They also light bonfires.

So tonight we found ourselves on the Clapham Common watching the free fireworks display (is there any other kind? You can see them for miles!), which was totally awesome. I love almost all shiny, sparkly things, especially those in the sky, so fireworks are always pretty exciting for me. My favourites are the whizzers and the screamers (Brendan assures me that these are the technical terms), and I am one of those who joins in emphatically with the ooooohs and aaaaaaaahs of the crowd, helped along by the accompanying emotive musical choices (e.g. Aerosmith, Coldplay and Queen).

Fireworks over Clapham Common

The rain this afternoon threatened to ruin the pyrotechnic display, and I ended up with wet feet and legs and feeling rather sorry for myself on the way home from work, but it was the perfect occasion to don my new woollen jumper and camel coat, so I spent the evening feeling snug and happy as I watched the impressive Guy Fawkes show.

Happy Guy Fawkes day everyone! Hope you managed to see a firework or two!
